Tristan und Isolde

One of my favourite stories, so I really wanted this to land, and it didn't quite. The singing was genuinely great, but it felt more like a concert performance than an opera; two people singing at the audience rather than to each other, which is fatal for a love story this consuming. The staging was too austere for my taste... this is a story that begs for something overwhelming and indulgent, and it held back. A little heartbreaking, honestly, for all the wrong reasons.
